On October 31st, 17-year-old Jaylen Dwayne Edgar was arrested in connection with a shooting in downtown Orlando. The teen is facing two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm.

Due to the severity of the charges, the State Attorney’s Office is charging him as an adult. The State is preparing for a grand jury indictment to bring formal charges and it is undisclosed whether they will file as a Pre-Meditated Murder or Felony Murder (the unlawful killing of another during the commission of qualifying felonies).

While the initial media reports paint the shooter as the primary aggressor, many details are yet unknown. Identifying close eyewitnesses, obtaining more footage, and investigating any potential history between the teen and the victims are essential elements to prepare a defense.  As a defense attorney, we would also delve into the specific events leading up to the incident and examine whether the shooter may have perceived an imminent danger and felt forced to react, acting in self-defense.
