In recent Jacksonville news, Rekisha Duckworth was arrested and indicted for Embezzlement by a U.S. Postal Service Employee. She now faces potential federal prison time due to this offense. Ms. Duckworth’s allegation arises from an accusation that she took a gift card and bracelet from an article of mail that she was not entitled to under the law while working for the post office.

In order to defend Ms. Duckworth, our law firm would have to first determine if there was sufficient evidence of the criminal act.  We would investigate to see if there was video evidence or witness testimony to prove that she actually committed the crime.  If that evidence does exist, our next step would be providing mitigation to explain why Ms. Duckworth was involved in this offense.  Was she forced and under duress? Was she experiencing financial difficulty? Did she have a mental health breakdown or suffer from drug addiction where she needs treatment? We would submit character evidence certificates, proof of education and other good deeds to show this one instance is isolated to receive a reduced or favorable sentence. In this case, showing the Court that the Defendant is a good citizen who is capable of rehabilitation would be the most successful strategy of defense if the evidence exists.
