A few weeks ago, an alarming event unfolded on the Turnpike near mile marker 251 during the early hours of the morning. Shots were fired at a Tesla, leaving its driver injured.

Highway incidents during which one a motorist shoots a gun at another motorist are known as “road rage” incidents.  But that term is problematic, given the law in Florida.  In our great state, a person is entitled to defend him/herself with force, and, if the situation calls for it, deadly force.  So a shooting incident that occurs on the highway that is called “road rage,” as the title of this news article shows, could well be an instance in which the shooter was exercising his/her rights to defend himself/herself!  Sometimes the news gets it wrong!

tesla shot at on fl turnpike, driver injured

Notice how the article doesn’t mention any actions taken or words spoken by the Tesla driver.  His/her contribution to the situation is totally missing, when it could be the key to understanding the situation.  If this missing information were supplied, then the title of the article could well be this: “Man arrested after defending himself by resorting to the protections guaranteed by Florida law.”

A good defense in the event described here probably starts with the concept of self-defense.  Let’s put on the focus on how the shooter was not acting but how he was reacting to threat against him.  “The best offense is a good defense.”
